Southnord to Curate Public Programmes for When We See Us Exhibition at Liljevalchs

Southnord has been commissioned to design the public programming for When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, opening at Liljevalchs Konsthall on 10 October 2025.

Originally showcased at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), When We See Us is a landmark exhibition that explores 100 years of Black portraiture and self-representation. Curated by Koyo Kouoh and Tandazani Dhlakama, the exhibition brings together over over 148 artworks created by Black artists worldwide from the past 100 years, works that are placed in dialogue with Black thinkers, writers, and poets active today. These works are organised under six themes: The Everyday, Joy & Revelry, Repose, Sensuality, Spirituality and Triumph and Emancipation.

“This exhibition carries the weight of history, identity, and artistic lineage. It is an extraordinary moment to see it come to Stockholm. We are honoured to play this key role in extending the conversation, bringing new voices into the space, and exploring what these works mean within a Nordic setting," says Marcia Harvey Isaksson, founder of Southnord.

Southnord has invited a group of inspiring Afro-Swedes to activate the exhibition through guided tours and themed walkthroughs, sonic performances, readings for children, portrait workshops for youth and more. These activations expand on the themes of When We See Us, situating them within a Nordic context and making space for dialogue across artistic and intellectual communities. More details will be shared in the coming months. For updates, visit www.southnord.com and follow us on social media at @southnord.artspace.
