Southnord Celebrates Two Years and Opens UP NEXT 2025 Exhibition
Southnord marks its two-year anniversary this September with the opening of UP NEXT 2025, an exhibition spotlighting emerging Afro-Nordic voices in contemporary art.
Since 2023, the platform has grown its support of Black and Afro-Nordic artists across the region. Southnord has hosted exhibitions, launched a residency, and curated programmes that have brought together artists, curators, and audiences from the Nordics and beyond. The anniversary is both a moment of reflection and a step forward in shaping the organisation’s future.
Central to this celebration is UP NEXT, Southnord’s annual open call platform for emerging Afro-Nordic artists. This year’s winner, Ugandan-born artist Viola Nimuhamya, presents the work One at a Time. The exhibition is curated by Max Diallo Jakobsen who was awarded Southnord’s first residency place earlier this year, continuing Southnord’s mission of introducing new perspectives and practices to the public.
“When we look back, it’s hard to believe the amount of work that has been accomplished in two years. It’s incredible!,” says Marcia Harvey Isaksson, Founder and Director of Southnord. “We remain committed to supporting Afro-Nordic art and voices, and can’t wait to see what the the next few years hold for us.”
The UP NEXT 2025 and Southnord’s anniversary party takes place on 3 September 2025 at Katarina Bangata 40, Stockholm, Sweden.
