Southnord curates screening for Kulturnatten

Still from I Think Of Silences When I Think Of You by Jonelle Twum

This year, Southnord will be collaborating with Kulturhuset Stadsteatern for Kulturnatten to bring audiences a screening of four shorts by Afro-Swedish filmmakers.

Being an election year in Sweden, this year's theme for Kulturnatten is Röster/Voices; the day also coincides with the Zimbabwean Independence Day. The event will begin with a BBC clip from 1980 that captures the hope and anxiety surrounding that country’s first democratic election.

The evenings screenings in Klara Biografen are curated by Marcia Harvey Isaksson and will start on the hour every hour from 18:00 until 21:00, free of charge.

In the current political climate, it is more important than ever to make our voices heard, and when we do the hard work quietly and consistently, we hope our silences are not mistaken for complicity,” muses curator Marcia Harvey Isaksson.

The featured films are:

Newsnight Special 1980, BBC (6 mins 45 sec)

I Think of Silences When I Think of You Jonelle Twum (9 min)

Var slutar jaget/Where Does the Sea End? Genet Solomon (9 min 55 sek)

Utan er Jean-Luc Mwepu (13 min)

Ouroboros Anton Sizwe Isaksson (6 min 17 sek)

Through various artistic expressions, the films explore themes such as silence, the dreams and realities of migration, homelessness and survival strategies. They also address existential questions about life, death and rebirth, and the relationship between humans, nature and the divine.

Date: 18 April

Time: 18:00 followed by every hour on the hour until 21:00

Place: Sergels torg, Klarabiografen, plan 2
