Southnord is pleased to announce that Afro-Brazilian artist and painter Felis Dos has been selected as the second awardee of the Southnord Residency Programme.

The residency, hosted in partnership with Lusaka Contemporary Art Center (LuCAC) in Zambia, offers visual artists and curators of African descent born or situated in the Nordics an opportunity to immerse themselves in a new artistic environment for two months.

“We are proud to be able to continue with our self-funded residency programme and are excited to give a painter the opportunity to focus on their practice within a Southern African context,” says Marcia Harvey Isaksson, Founder and Director of Southnord. “Brazil homes the largest African diaspora in the world, and it will be interesting to see what new discussions Felis’ experiences can spark within a modern Zambian cultural setting and what exchanges may arise.”

Influenced by his academic background in philosophy and religion, Dos uses colour, rhythm and composition as structural elements that generate tension and ambiguity. Each piece holds multiple references and temporalities without resolving them into a single narrative. His work investigates how images are constructed through overlapping cultural and symbolic systems. By working in proximity to a contemporary African context, not as a subject to be represented but as a condition that can actively influence new artistic work, Felis will continue this research.

The Southnord Residency Programme runs annually, with the next open call set to launch in early 2027.
