Children’s Reading with Vera Nyblom
Southnord invites you and your little ones to a book reading with child educator, Vera Nyblom. This is the first of a series of children and youth programs we have prepared as part of the When We See Us exhibition at Liljecvalchs. Vera will read various children's books by Afro Nordic authors for an audience aged 4-8. The books on Vera’s reading list centre inclusion and diverse Afro-Swedish perspectives, including works by Anna Munya, Emily Joof and Kayo Mpoyi.
About The Authors
Anna Munyua is an author and Swedish teacher with roots in Kenya. She has been making space for Afro Swedish perspectives in literature for several years through her book series about Melvin and his adventures. Through her seats on the board of both MeR Barnkultur and Sveriges Författarförbunds barn och ungdomssektion, her advocacy extends far and wide, making her an important voice in black children's literature in Sweden.
Emily Joof is the founder of Mbife Books an independent publishing house in Sweden and The Gambia. She is a prolific author of children's books, including the critically acclaimed I Will Swim Next Time illustrated by Matilda Ruta. She works for community organisations, NGOs and international organizations as an Education Technical Advisor. Her work centers on inclusion and contributes to advancing and improving children's rights and access to foundational literacy and numeracy in the global south.
Kayo Mpoyi is a writer and artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. She has written several novels including the children's book Kitoko with Linn Grebäck. Originally born in Kinchasa, DRC, Kayo moved to Sweden as a ten year old and has created several works inspired by her experience of migration and identity formation.
Vera Nyblom is a Zimbabwean-born, Swedish-based educator with over three decades of pedagogical practice. Her organisational skill and community engagement made her the perfect team member at Southnord during the Southnord Artfest 2023.
