Max Diallo Jakobsen Wins First Ever Southnord Residency Programme Award

Southnord is pleased to announce that artist, writer, and historian Max Diallo Jakobsen has been selected as the first awardee of the Southnord Residency Programme. The residency, hosted in partnership with Lusaka Contemporary Art Center (LuCAC) in Zambia, offers visual artists and curators of African descent born or situated in the Nordics an opportunity to immerse themselves in a new artistic environment for two months.

“Through this residency, we are continuing our work of fostering artistic exchange between the Nordics and the African continent,” says Marcia Harvey Isaksson, Founder and Director of Southnord. “Max's research-driven approach and deep engagement with African artistic and cultural histories align beautifully with the spirit of this programme. We look forward to seeing how his time at LuCAC will shape his work.”

Jakobsen’s work explores material imaginaries through text, textile, and image, with a particular focus on African art histories and cultural narratives. His project BLUEPRINTS, which examines indigo textile traditions in Guinea, was recently presented at the 19th Triennial Symposium of African Art. His residency at LuCAC will explore historical and artistic ties between Zambia, Guinea, and Sweden, while welcoming new artistic collaborations. The Southnord Residency Programme runs annually, with the next open call set to launch in early 2026.
