SOUTHNORD X PÅ SERGELS TORG PRESENT DRUM & PAINT OUTDOOR EXHIBITION, CELEBRATING THE LIVES OF TWO EXTRAORDINARY JAZZ ARTISTS

Southnord, in collaboration with På Sergels torg, presents DRUM & PAINT an outdoor exhibition that weaves together the lifestories of two jazz artists from different eras, Pete Brown and Lefifi Tladi. They both found refuge in Sweden during challenging times.

Drum & Paint shines a spotlight on Norwegian jazz musician Pete Brown, his adopted sister, singer and actress Jossie Pollard, and their grandmother, Emilie Brown. Archival images, many of which come from the Afrikanere i Norge (AFRIN) Archives, are displayed alongside the musical and improvisational paintings of South African jazz musician, poet, and painter Lefifi Tladi. Their artistry and experiences create a unique narrative of resilience and cultural exchange.

”With this exhibition we aim to bring blind spots in our Nordic cultural history into focus. It is important that we fill in the gaps and diversify the narrative. We are happy to be able to do this during the Afro-Swedish History Week and the Stockholm Jazz Festival, celebrating both”, says exhibition curator and producer, Marcia Harvey Isaksson.

Both artists share a history of fleeing their home countries. Pete Brown escaped Nazi-occupied Norway, while Lefifi Tladi sought refuge from South Africa's apartheid regime. In Sergels torg, their paths converge for the first time, creating a moment of connection through their art.

The exhibition is produced by Southnord with support from På Sergels torg, a collaboration between the City of Stockholm, local property owners, businesses, and civil society. Together, they contribute to a lively Sergels torg where people thrive and spend time.

Join us for this celebration of art, resilience, and the power of music and painting to transcend borders. Drum & Paint pays tribute to the enduring spirit of these remarkable artists.
