Roots En Route featuring Camille Norment, Sofia Jernberg, Toubab Holmes and Charmaine Watkiss

Roots En Route is a multi-sensory installation by four artists who will create a multi-sensory installation in dialogue with this special site — examining rootedness and displacement; asking what grows where it was planted and what survives the crossing. The African plants that fill these glasshouses carry their own histories of movement and adaptation. 

Camille Norment in collaboration with Sofia Jernberg create a soundscape drawing on the insects and birds of the plants' homelands. Toubab Holmes' site-specific scent installation traces the hidden journeys of plants through the extractive system of perfumery. Charmaine Watkiss visits the botanical legacies and healing traditions of her Caribbean ancestry through large-scale drawings of Plant Warriors. Together, the three works read the botanical garden as an archive of movement, and the plants in it as things that were carried, taken and made to travel.

  • Camille is an Oslo-based multimedia artist who works with sound, installation, sculpture, drawing, performance, and video. As a musician and composer, her work is well known in both contemporary art and music.  Her expended practice creates new knowledge emergent from sonic narratives, as somatic and cognitive experiences.   

     

  • Toubab is a multidisciplinary artist, researcher and educator at the Stockholm University of the Arts. With over twenty years of experience, he has performed internationally as a circus artist, and dancer as well as acting as an outside eye to other productions. When not teaching or performing, Toubab is to be found in his perfumery studio where he currently researching how his practice as an apprentice perfumer/olfactory artist intersects with the practice of performing arts. 

  • Charmaine is a British artist based in London, whose practice investigates the botanical legacy of the Caribbean. She is particularly interested in healing traditions handed down through the matrilineal line, her work reflects this through constructed narratives around women. She accesses public archives which serve as a material from which she constructs narrative responses. Her compositions of women all use her own likeness as a way of enacting what she calls ‘memory stories’, channelling a multitude of strong female archetypes in order to inform her works on paper, some as large as life sized.

  • Sofia is an exceptional singer/vocal artist and composer. She studied jazz and composition in Sweden and lives and works in Stockholm. Her work focuses on unconventional techniques and sounds, such as non-verbal vocalization, split tones, toneless singing, and distortion.
