Sensory Sonic Performance: Pehmee Collective, Hit Different

Hit Different is a listening session by Pehmee Collective that treats sound as something made together rather than received. It holds two things at once, the feeling of collectivity and the private experience of listening and asks what happens when a room is invited to contribute to the sound it is sitting inside. Participants who want to can record their voice, word or sounding, and those recordings enter the installation as another layer.

The work aligns itself with storytellers as collectors of memory and knowledge of the body. Storytelling sustains history, ritual and psychological safety, and turns chaos into meaning. It shares a core function with non-idiomatic vocal and kinetic improvisation, which is meaning-making in real time, structure built from uncertainty without relying on fixed ideas of what sounding together should be. The invitation is to hear, then to answer out of your own need and impulse, whether that complements, aligns, opposes or crosses what is already in the air. It is entered with shared risk and collective presence.

Pehmee | The Soft Collective by suinner + trabelsi is focused on amplifying the fullest presence of marginalized bodies and interested creating space for them in media, art, fashion, and culture. Collective is aiming for liberation from intersectional feminist, anti-fasist, collectively responsible and anti-racist angles. Rooted in activism, the collective pushes beyond representation to challenge societal norms to promote self expression and radical Joy.
