Akinbode Akinbiyi is a Berlin-based, British-born Nigerian artist whose primary photographic focus is large, sprawling megacities — slowly wandering and meandering the highways and byways in an attempt to understand and deeply engage with the modern metropolis. For over five decades Akinbode has been photographing major African metropolises and cities like Lagos, Cairo, Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Khartoum, Addis Ababa, Dakar and Bamako. With his analogue Rolleiflex camera, he lets the many layers of the cities reveal themselves, capturing the unspectacular gestures, encounters and atmospheres through which everyday life unfolds. His installation for the main Artfest exhibition at Amos Rex, The Other Side of the Mountain, consists of 36 large-scale black and white photographs takes us on a journey through Bamako, Johannesburg and Lagos. We have invited Akinbode to the Finnish Museum of Photography to speak in depth about his rich and long practice.
