Afro-Swedish History Walk

Southnord invites you to embark on an enriching and informative walk I slavhandelns fotspår (In the footsteps of the Slave Trade) ahead of the Liljevalchs opening of When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, a landmark exhibition celebrating 100 years of Black portraiture exhibition. This walking tour, organised by Afrosvenskarnas Riksorganisation, takes you through Gamla Stan and focuses on how Swedish government institutions, merchants, politicians, and scientists all played a role in the transatlantic slave trade and that the enslavement of Africans on Swedish territory did not end until 1847.

9th October also marks the anniversary of the Swedish Parliament's abolition of the transatlantic slave trade on the Caribbean island of Saint-Barthélemy in 1847 and the release of the last slaves of the Swedish plantation colony.
